AI labs will keep frontier models for themselves and target problems worth more than tokens

jbarbier predicts token sales won't be frontier AI labs' main business within a few years: open-weight models are closing the gap, Chinese labs are replicating the frontier at scale, and the best models are becoming too dangerous to hand to everyone. Instead, labs will keep their strongest models in-house and point them at problems worth more than tokens — proofs, molecules, financial models, diagnoses. He notes this shift is already visible.
