PhD student pushes back on Yarin Gal's independence-first lab culture: fewer papers hurt prospects

Responding to Yarin Gal's view that a PhD should train independent researchers who conceive and execute their own ideas—with big projects where each person contributes little better left to industry—a PhD student shared the cost of that culture.
Their supervisor ran the same model: it yielded strong first-author papers with only 1-3 coauthors, but left them so far behind on total publication count that their job prospects suffered. The exchange captures the real tradeoff between deep independence and publication volume in elite AI labs.
