Ben Reinhardt lays out a 'bubbling cauldrons and strike teams' model for healthy research ecosystems
Ben_Reinhardt · x · 2026-09-22
Ben Reinhardt publishes a long-form piece arguing that metascience lacks usable system models, and proposes a scale-free framework for healthy research ecosystems built on three fractal components:
- Bubbling cauldrons: a critical density of small-scale, bottom-up, practitioner-directed work
- Transient strike teams: top-down, fast-moving teams formed to attack specific problems
- Mechanisms that keep cauldrons boiling, nucleate bubbles, recognize when one is ripe, and rapidly form and scale a team around it
He argues the pattern repeats at every scale — across nations, inside Bell Labs or DeepMind, and within single academic labs. The framework leans on metaphor, but he contends metaphors are necessary until metascience develops better models.
