Math isn't as open as claimed: NSA kept differential cryptanalysis secret since 1974

UCLA professor Lior Pachter argues that talk of mathematics being "open" is disingenuous: the NSA discovers math it does not publish. As an example, differential cryptanalysis was known at the NSA in 1974 but was only published after Shamir independently rediscovered it in 1991.
