Responding to recent bad press around Mistral, a French analyst argues critics misread its strategy: Mistral is quietly building a vertically integrated AI infrastructure operator at European scale.
The plan includes its own compute capacity, eventual in-house chip design, a service layer (regional endpoints, agents, integrations), and a model catalog opening up to third-party models starting with GLM-5.2.
The implicit thesis: Chinese open-source and distillation will commoditize models, no lead lasts more than 12 months, and intelligence is already sufficient for most use cases — so the real battleground is pricing, volume, integration, security, and sovereign data, not leaderboard rankings.
