SemiAnalysis founder Dylan Patel claims open source is dying fast, saying multiple Chinese labs are telling inference providers their next models will be licensed rather than open. Thom Wolf pushed back with a list of notable open releases since that interview: Kimi K3 (weights released), DeepSeek V4-Flash/V4-Pro, Meta Muse Spark 1.2/Muse Code/Muse Glimmer, Qwen3.8-Max (2.4T-A95B), GLM-5.3, NVIDIA Nemotron 3.5 Lightning, Liquid AI LFM2.5, IBM Granite 4.2, Tencent Hy-MT2 and more — all within roughly one month (mid-July to late August), a stark contrast to the 'open is dying' narrative.
