DeepMind paper distills empirical lessons on work and wellbeing for AI futures

A new paper from Google DeepMind's AI x Society group, "Work, Wellbeing, and Choice" (arXiv:2609.11019), reviews psychological, sociological, and economic evidence on the link between paid work and wellbeing, drawing on studies of the unemployed, retirees, lottery winners, and financially dependent spouses across OECD countries, China, India, and Gulf states. It identifies three mediating factors — agency and choice, availability of alternative sources of work's latent benefits, and social/systemic context — and uses them to ground debates on AI-driven economic transformation, arguing wellbeing depends less on work itself than on whether exit is voluntary and what replaces it.
