NYU Tandon School of Engineering has welcomed Juan Carlos Perdomo as Assistant Professor in Computer Science and Engineering and the NYU Center for Data Science.
His research focuses on performative prediction: when a model's predictions influence the behavior of the people being predicted, the prediction reshapes the reality it describes. The school's explainer uses the example of an algorithm flagging students as likely to fail based on race and socioeconomic status — if students learn of the prediction, it could become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
