- A Reddit user discovered that deleting ChatGPT conversations doesn't erase them from the model's Memory system, which retained detailed summaries of every deleted chat — invisible in the user-facing memory summary.
- Trigger: an OpenAI promo email suggested "caricature me using everything you know about me," and the output surfaced sensitive details from long-deleted conversations.
- When asked how to delete the data, ChatGPT twice pointed to nonexistent memory-management controls, then admitted it can't directly delete or verify deletion of the retained info.
- The only reliable control is disabling Memory entirely, at the cost of personalization. Anyone who discussed personal or professionally sensitive topics and then deleted the chats should know the data may resurface later.
