Shopify CEO Now Horrified by AI 'Slop Grenades' After Mandating AI Use

Fortune's new reporting details how Shopify's all-in AI push is backfiring. CEO Tobias Lütke, who made AI use a "baseline expectation" for staff, told the Knowledge Project podcast that workers now spew unreviewed AI-generated emails, memos, and code at each other: "We call those 'slop grenades.'"
It's not unique to Shopify: an April survey of 1,150 office workers found 40% had encountered "workslop" — AI content that looks polished but is hollow — and employees waste about 3.4 hours a month cleaning it up, costing a 10,000-person company an estimated $8.1 million monthly.
