Fudan team claims first observation of a quantum state in mitochondria of living cells

A bioRxiv preprint by Yu Yang, Zhenglong Gu (Fudan University) and Bo Song (University of Shanghai for Science and Technology) claims the first observation of a quantum state in mitochondria of living cells. The authors argue life's high energy efficiency cannot be explained by classical physics alone, and that quantum biology has been limited by a lack of experimental evidence in living cells. Combining experiments on cells, tissues and isolated mitochondria, they report direct evidence for quantum effects underlying biological energy efficiency. The work is a preprint and not yet peer-reviewed.
