Schmidt predicts agents will kill the UI — and gets publicly mocked for it

burkov · x · 2026-09-20

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt argues user interfaces will 'largely go away' because agents speak natural language and UIs can be generated on demand — 'I can say, generate me a set of buttons that solves this problem, and it's generated for you.' Today's websites are designed for humans; that premise changes in the agent era.

ML researcher Burkov pushes back hard, mocking Schmidt's predictive record ('that of a third grader') and citing his old claim that young people would change their names as adults over childhood posts. A real debate over whether agents end traditional UI.
