Ex-OpenAI safety VP Brundage: AI risk became an "our lifetime" concern around 2018

Miles Brundage, former OpenAI safety systems VP, says that after 15 years in AI safety/existential risk, he stopped hearing "this is a distant-future issue" around 2018 — it had become obvious to close observers that AI risk is an "in our lifetime" matter.

In the thread, neilchilson notes that people at frontier labs he spoke to last year, after walking through their chain of reasoning to recursive self-improvement, agreed even a tiny extinction probability deserves far more attention now; gabrielweil pushes back asking who exactly these people are.
