Open-weight models hit 78.4% of token volume on Vercel's gateway, up from ~40% in June
SumitGup · x · 2026-09-20
Vercel AI Gateway data shows open-weight models now account for 78.4% of token volume versus 21.6% for closed models — nearly double their 40% share in June. DeepSeek V4.1 Flash alone generates 59.3% of gateway tokens, while Claude Opus 4.8 and Claude Sonnet 5 each hold just 1.7%.
Spending tells the opposite story: closed models capture disproportionate revenue due to much higher per-token pricing. Claude Opus 4.8 represents 13.7% of spending despite only 1.7% of tokens. The poster reads this as the real motive behind Dario Amodei and OpenAI's push for tighter AI regulation: open models are rapidly taking over the market beneath them.
