Web-scraped pretraining data is tapped out; blocking training on public data is unethical
herbiebradley · x · 2026-09-20
Replying to a debate on whether the AI safety community should partner with pro-copyright camps, herbiebradley argues: realistic copyright rulings wouldn't slow training, just accelerate data spending; pretraining has passed the point where web-scraped data is significantly tapped, with further pretraining and RL data largely licensed; and fundamentally, he thinks copyright laws preventing training on public data are unethical.
