Adding to his thread, iamtrask notes that the same community could in principle pursue multiple contradictory strategies in parallel — but it would require a group of people to defect from the status-game side (with perks like salary and prestige) to join complex legal proceedings. That, he implies, is why the copyright-alliance route rarely gets pursued.
