Gary Marcus lists three ways Dario Amodei blew his credibility in one week
GaryMarcus · x · 2026-09-19
Gary Marcus argues Dario Amodei undercut his own "pace the frontier" essay within a week:
- Non-independent oversight: Anthropic named METR (embedded in the same Bay Area circles) and Accenture (already a business partner) as external monitors, which Marcus calls insincere.
- Secret wet lab: Anthropic quietly built a Bay Area wet biology lab where Claude would direct lab robots for drug development, reportedly without institutional review boards — "Jurassic Park waiting to happen."
- Words vs. actions: Citing Trump's jab that Dario is "pretending to be a perfect little angel," Marcus says the gap between calling for a slowdown while expanding risky experiments has badly damaged Amodei's credibility.
The post references Dario's Sept 12 essay (75.7M views) promising permanent employee-level access for third-party evaluators, and the Sept 18 wet lab report.
