Seth Lazar: open-source Codex-style agents could unbundle platforms and advocate for users

Responding to skepticism that consumer AI agents must flow through platform-controlled distribution (iPhone, Android, Meta apps), Seth Lazar argues platforms are fine as long as they aren't vertically integrated and agents can interoperate. He suggests an open, simplified Codex where you can swap the model at will without degrading performance. He distinguishes agents unbundling platforms from agents acting as genuine user advocates—the latter more likely if the former happens, though the two are independent.
