Big Short's Steve Eisman: AI labs have no moats and are manufacturing a crisis to lock in a regulated duopoly
SumitGup · x · 2026-09-18
Investor Steve Eisman (of The Big Short) called the AI labs' safety rhetoric "all nonsense" in an interview:
- The token maxing era is over, and open-weight models are taking big market share;
- Leading labs have no moats whatsoever and are nervous;
- They are trying to manufacture a crisis that creates regulation they can manipulate into the duopoly they want.
The retweeter adds that the real "AI apocalypse" is limited to the AI datacenter business: local open models are nearly as good, free, and improving, putting massive compute bets at risk of blowing up.
