a16z: AI codegen doubled or quadrupled new apps per month, but downloads stay flat

a16z's Charts of the Week finds AI codegen has doubled or quadrupled monthly new apps across iOS, Android and Chrome — while downloads (or ratings) stay stagnant. Worse, the share of apps showing escape velocity (10+ ratings, 100+ Android downloads, 10+ Chrome downloads) has plummeted: 'App-Slop is the story, for now.' Separately, only 3% of US consumers pay for AI out of pocket (up from under 1% in 2023), with the youngest cohort adopting at 4x the rate of the oldest.
