AI ported a distro in 20 minutes — is NVIDIA sawing off its own CUDA moat?
BringTea_666 · reddit · 2026-09-18
A developer argues NVIDIA may be cutting the branch it sits on: he used AI to port a Linux distro to Windows in about 20 minutes, work that would take an experienced dev days.
His logic:
- NVIDIA's moat is CUDA — going non-CUDA means 90% of things need custom work or break entirely.
- But AI is getting competent fast, already writing assembly and custom kernels.
- Soon porting CUDA-oriented code to any hardware could be as easy as asking an AI, producing tailor-made, possibly faster code.
He concludes CUDA's migration barrier will thin rapidly as AI coding improves.
