Cell paper lays out how world models could transform biomedicine, from molecules to patients

A team publishing in Cell introduces a framework for "World models for biomedicine": adapting the AI concept of world models—representing a system's state and simulating its evolution under alternative actions—to biology. A biomedical world model maps multimodal observations to a model state, takes an action (a drug, a knockout, a culture-condition change), predicts a distribution over next states, and keeps simulating from its own predictions.
Key applications:
- Simulation: compare alternative actions on the same state, e.g. virtually testing several treatments on one patient
- Intervention design: search in reverse for actions predicted to reach a target state
- Sequential planning: optimize action sequences over long horizons, as in cellular reprogramming or adaptive cancer therapy
Two properties matter: the model state need not reconstruct all of biology but must keep history that predicts outcomes under actions; and conditioning on an action doesn't make a prediction causal—that's determined by training data. The paper closes by asking what data and evaluations this vision requires.
