Mozilla: open-weight AI now only ~4 months behind frontier, yet captures just 4% of model-layer revenue

- Mozilla's new 91-page report says open-weight AI is now only about 4 months behind the frontier.
- By August, 8 of OpenRouter's 10 most-used models were open-weight, 7 of them Chinese-built; DeepSeek became the first open model to lead the platform in weekly requests.
- Yet the economics are inverted: open models handled 20% of measured OpenRouter usage but captured only 4% of model-layer revenue in the cited 2025 window.
- Mozilla attributes the mismatch largely to pricing: closed models cost roughly 6x more per call at about 90% capability parity.
