Mozilla report: open-weight AI just 4 months behind frontier but captures only 4% of revenue

A new 91-page Mozilla report finds open-weight AI is now only about 4 months behind the frontier, with DeepSeek, Moonshot, and Z.ai alone raising roughly $21B at frontier-lab scale.
Key findings:
- 8 of OpenRouter's 10 most-used models by August token volume were open-weight, 7 of them Chinese-built; DeepSeek became the first open model to lead the platform in weekly requests
- The economics are inverted: open models handled 20% of measured usage but captured only 4% of model-layer revenue
- Mozilla attributes much of this to pricing—closed models cost roughly 6x more per call at 90% capability parity
The takeaway: high usage doesn't necessarily translate into model-layer revenue.
