Nature paper introduces Paper2Agent: turning research papers into interactive AI agents

A team led by James Zou at Stanford published a Nature paper introducing Paper2Agent, an automated framework that converts research papers into AI agents — transforming papers from passive artefacts into active systems acting as a "virtual corresponding author."
Key points:
- Exposes a paper's manuscript, supplementary materials, datasets, code and workflows as agent-native knowledge rather than static text
- Uses multiple agents to analyze the paper and codebase and build an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server
- Automatically generates and runs tests to refine the MCP and improve robustness
The work aims to lower barriers to disseminating and reusing research, where readers traditionally must understand and adapt a paper's code and methods themselves.
