METR president Chris Painter explains what the AI eval org actually does
dhadfieldmenell · x · 2026-09-17
Amid fresh online attention (and Ben Todd joking that METR's biggest donor is "the shadowy organisation known as TED talks"), METR president Chris Painter published a re-up of the org's mission.
METR's aim: if AI truly became autonomous, hard to steer, and close to "going rogue," the public should find out. If evidence exists inside an AI company that it's losing control of AI, METR wants that shared with governments and the public. The work dates to 2022, with collaborations including OpenAI.
