Open weights aren't enough: four ownership tests for your personal AI memory and harness

Responding to mem0ai's article "Open Memory, Own the Intelligence," the author argues that open-source weights don't equal personal AI freedom — memory ownership lives in the harness, not the model. How context is written, trimmed, and exported is all locked inside someone else's agent loop.
The author proposes four ownership criteria for choosing a Personal AI / memory layer:
- Loop visibility: Can you inspect how memories are written and trimmed?
- Export completeness: Can you take your judgments and preferences with you when leaving?
- Right to modify: Can you change the harness (tools, hooks, policies), or only temperature?
- Model replaceability: Does the memory contract survive a model swap?
Core point: ownership of your personal context depends on who writes and deletes your memory, not on whether the weights are open.
