After the x86 Monoculture: Software Will Suffer for Hardware's Fragmentation Again

Brad Wardell recalls the homogeneous era around 2010, when x86 had won, coprocessors were fully integrated, and all computers looked the same. He warns that the coming decade of diverse new architectures will bring poor code portability and endless hardware-agnostic abstraction layers — software people once again paying for hardware's inability to deliver a free lunch.
