Analogous to limited patent terms, the idea is that a 6-month monopoly is meaningless in a fast-moving industry—newer versions ship quickly and open models catch up anyway. The instant benefit: poor training for transparency, obedience, and honesty would be exposed by the community, pushing labs to take these seriously before closed release. Vendors could still sell commercial inference.
