PhD Who Chose CS in 2019 to Dodge AI Says 'PhD-Level Math AI' Forecast Was Accurate to the Year

A researcher recalls that when picking a PhD direction around 2019, the team worried it would be 'tragicomic if AI could do it better than us by graduation,' so they went into CS. That forecast turned out accurate to the year, as PhD-level math AI arrived roughly on schedule.
He says the Gauss autoformalizer agent from Math, Inc. was a strong signal that it was time to reassess their research direction.
