METR president re-ups mission: surface evidence if AI nears going rogue
dhadfieldmenell · x · 2026-09-17
Chris Painter, president of METR (Model Evaluation and Threat Research), took to X to restate what the organization does amid recent internet attention, with academics like Talia Ringer amplifying it:
- Core mission: ensure the public would find out if AI were truly autonomous, hard to steer, or close to "going rogue"; if evidence inside an AI company suggests loss of control is near, METR wants that information shared with governments and the public
- Track record: focused on this since 2022, working with frontier labs including OpenAI
- Third-party view: Ringer notes METR publishes results that don't map neatly onto "doomer" or "accelerationist" labels and deliberately hires people with competing views — matching her own interactions, "with all of the usual caveats"
