Apple unveils Reference Image to verify real photos via sensor-level trust chain, raising PCC privacy concerns

Apple's security research team published "Apple Reference Image", a new approach to verifying photography in the AI era.
- Problem: Generative AI makes photorealistic fakes trivial; C2PA-style post-capture metadata is vulnerable to tampering anywhere in the edit chain and can endanger photographers by tying images to identities.
- Approach: A chain of trust from the camera sensor through computational photography software, leveraging iPhone hardware security and Private Cloud Compute (PCC) to certify that an image reflects a real capture.
- Privacy pushback: Researcher naehrdine notes that Siri Recap already sends everything users say to PCC, and Reference Image extends this to photos, raising new privacy questions.
