Researcher debunks 'AI builders believe doom' claim: selection effects, not privileged insight

tallinzen · x · 2026-09-17

In a thread responding to a Coxon Daily interview, tallinzen calls the claim that "the people building AI earnestly believe it could kill us all by the end of the decade" false — he talks to AI builders daily and only a small minority believes this. On why doomers are overrepresented at OpenAI and Anthropic, he argues it's selection effects and social contagion, not privileged access: even granting those labs lead by a few months, the same people said the same things years ago when everyone's models were far worse.
