HashiCorp founder's "whiteboard defense": can you explain any AI-assisted system you shipped?
charles_irl · x · 2026-09-16
HashiCorp founder Mitchell Hashimoto proposes a benchmark for responsible AI usage he calls the "whiteboard defense": at any moment, you should be able to explain how any customer-facing system you shipped works and defend your decisions.
He doesn't expect line-level familiarity — exact function names don't matter. But you must confidently answer "why X over Y?", "what if this actor behaves maliciously?", "what data structure and why?", and "where does this fail?". For PoCs, demos and experiments, he doesn't care — generate 100% with AI and understand none of it, speed over quality. Customer-facing work is different.
