A University of Memphis study found no significant increases in pollution or temperature around xAI's Colossus 1 data center in southwest Memphis — the third study to reach the same conclusion. The author notes the nearby Boxtown neighborhood's poor living conditions predate xAI by at least half a century, stemming from its location next to a heavy industrial zone.

On the economics: xAI has paid $13M to the city and $13M to the county for 2025, about $26M total for the metro area. Mayor Paul Young has set aside 25% of the city's xAI 2025 tax revenue ($3.259M) for neighborhood improvements, including repaving streets and 0%-interest loans of up to $30,000.
