Cohere and Aleph Alpha merge to form first transatlantic foundation model developer with 1,000+ staff

Cohere signed a definitive agreement to merge with Germany's Aleph Alpha, becoming the first foundation model developer anchored on both sides of the Atlantic, growing to over 1,000 employees under the unified Cohere brand. CEO Aidan Gomez framed the deal around offering frontier AI without forcing governments and enterprises to choose capability over control. Cohere also named Ilhan Scheer as COO and Samuel Weinbach as Chief Research Officer.
