Cryptographer Matthew Green is skeptical of "trustworthy camera" schemes like Apple's Reference Image for high-value photos. He argues such provenance systems are too fragile: someone will eventually forge a photo that appears authentic and passes verification. Their real utility, he says, will be for low-value daily use rather than trusted high-stakes authentication.
