Legal scholar Neil Chilson assessed the effective altruism movement: impressive at organizing talent, spreading ideas, and building institutions, and admirable for making philanthropy about more than good intentions — but he argues an extreme thread within EA has promoted bad ideas.

He points to his July 2024 Reason article on the connection between EA and AI policy, amid renewed public scrutiny of the movement.
