European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced in her State of the European Union speech that she will invite the main frontier AI labs to discuss supporting industry efforts to "pace the frontier" of AI development.
- The move follows safety warnings from tech bosses including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's slowdown call, backed by Elon Musk and Sam Altman
- She also called for international collaboration on frontier model testing and evaluation, expected to include the UK and Canada but notably not the US or China
- Von der Leyen said Europe should focus on drawing the greatest value from frontier AI rather than leading its development
