One Claude-made commit permanently adds Claude as a GitHub contributor

Bitter_Run_9209 · reddit · 2026-09-16

A Reddit user had Claude make a trivial date-update commit on their 2018 thesis repo, only to find Claude listed as a contributor on GitHub. Worse, it can't be removed: even after force-pushing to delete Claude's commit, the contributor badge persists. "Is this a joke?" the author complains. The incident highlights an overlooked side effect of letting AI agents operate Git — their commits get credited to them in the contributor record and are hard to purge afterward.
