rajiinio argues civil society shouldn't be underestimated as an "embedded AI evaluator", pointing to Data & Society's "AI on the ground" team, CDT's AI governance lab, and ACLU's algo justice team. In a follow-up she notes these teams lack METR-level resources but are capable of meaningful empirical AI investigations, and their longstanding proximity to impacted populations gives them a unique evaluation perspective.
