Profound's 1.9B-Conversation Claim Audited: What Its Own Disclosures Actually Establish
gaganghotra_ · x · 2026-09-16
AI visibility platform Profound claims its Index is powered by 1.9 billion real user conversations, but discloses little methodology. The author previously posed 31 methodology questions to major prompt-tracking platforms — covering what AI visibility measures, prompt representativeness and weighting, effective sample size, statistical uncertainty, personalization and conversation context — and most named platforms never responded.
So the author began auditing them himself: compiling Profound's first-party public materials (product pages, Help Center docs, engineering posts, press releases) into a single source record, mapping how its three products — Prompt Volumes, Answer Engine Insights, and the Profound Index — differ in what they measure, distinguishing observed data from modelled estimates, and clearly marking where the public record ends rather than inferring answers.
