NYT: Zuckerberg jabs Anthropic in fight over AI slowdown, says safety over scaling
nordicinst · x · 2026-09-16
The New York Times reports that Mark Zuckerberg posted that leading AI labs should prioritize safety over improving their own technology — an apparent jab at Anthropic and CEO Dario Amodei, who days earlier called for a global AI slowdown over rapidly accelerating capabilities.
'Every lab has the responsibility and incentive to move at the pace required to train its models safely,' Zuckerberg wrote, saying Meta has made that commitment while rejecting an industry-wide pause as the wrong approach.
The debate was ignited by the resignation of an Anthropic researcher warning companies were 'gambling with our lives,' followed by statements from Amodei, Sam Altman, and Elon Musk. The NYT notes EU and Nordic firms are watching how the safety-first stance reshapes European AI policy and investment.
