In a retweeted thread, the author reflects on nearly a decade inside the rationalist community: its ideas are compelling and its foresight undeniable — the founders of every superintelligence effort are bound up in the rationality sphere, and Sam Altman and Greg Brockman used to frequent the MIRI offices.
He likens rationalists to athletes with hypertrophied physiques: strangely specialized minds that are uniquely able to be correct on topics removed from daily experience, though off-putting to many. He personally opposes polyamory, veganism, and consequentialist intuitions, and wouldn't call himself a rationalist — but trusts them on factual questions.
