800 VDC is the likely endgame for datacenter power as AI racks hit 120–300+ kW

BenBajarin · x · 2026-09-16

Ben Bajarin points to his March deep-dive arguing that legacy AC/low-voltage power chains built for 10–20 kW racks can't serve 120–300+ kW AI racks. Delivering 120 kW at 48V needs 2,500A, driving oversized copper and wasted heat; 800V DC cuts current 16x and conversion losses. The structural question is how much rack density the electrical plant can absorb — and NVIDIA's platform roadmap will set the pace of the 800VDC transition.
