ohlennart (DeepMind) lays out his take on Europe's AI strategy:
- Partnering with the US should be the mainline strategy, not competing head-on at the frontier
- Europe's biggest opportunity is in complements to frontier AI, not substitutes: robotics, advanced manufacturing, pharma, biotech — leverage existing strengths
- Most AI strategy isn't AI-specific: labor and capital market reforms become more urgent
In a follow-up he adds that the EU level may be the wrong policy level entirely — the EU is too big and dysfunctional to act on meaningful timescales; focus should shift to national policy in Germany, France, the UK, etc.
