Celesto AI open-sources SmolVM for disposable macOS sandboxes on Apple Silicon
aniketmaurya · x · 2026-09-16
Celesto AI's SmolVM now supports disposable macOS environments: create a temporary full macOS desktop locally on an Apple Silicon Mac, open it via Screen Sharing, and delete it when done. Key details: test .dmg apps and installers; local folders shared read-only by default; SIP, Gatekeeper, and permission prompts stay intact; first image prep downloads a 15–18 GB Apple restore file (20–40 min, 50 GB free space, macOS 14+); prepared images are reusable for fast subsequent sandboxes. SmolVM is open source, positioning Celesto AI ahead of Cognition on macOS sandbox support.
