Robotics researcher Glen Berseth argues foundational models are making classic manipulation tasks cheaper, not better. Citing Jitendra Malik's point that "robotics is also about dexterity and dynamics," he says the field should push performance — more object variety, real-world robustness, multi-robot/human interaction, real-time control, better hardware — rather than only shifting the cost curve left on tasks solved decades ago in Minsky's lab.
