OpenAI to retire GPT-5.5 from ChatGPT and Codex on Oct 14, but it stays on the API
OpenAIDevs · x · 2026-09-16
OpenAI announced that GPT-5.5 will be retired from ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex across all plans on October 14, directing Codex users to switch to GPT-5.6 Sol or GPT-6 Astra.
However, per the OpenAIDevs account, the model won't fully disappear: GPT-5.5 remains available via the OpenAI API Platform and in Codex sessions authenticated with an API key — only the consumer-facing surfaces are dropping it.
