UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center received $40M from the OpenAI Foundation to make personalized cancer vaccines more effective. Immunologist Benjamin Vincent and computational biologist Alex Rubinsteyn will gather clinical data (long-read WGS, scRNA-seq, targeted mass spec, tumor-specific TCRs) to train AI models that identify stronger cancer-cell targets and guide precise vaccine design. Rubinsteyn notes personalized vaccines are finally showing clinical efficacy but often fail because target selection is too arbitrary. Findings will be shared with cancer researchers worldwide.
